After listening to her explain the focus of her book, I was so intruiged with her angle that I decided to go ahead and order the book. This book is no different. It is well worth the read. I would say that it does require an open mind to absorb the information given, but it does so in a way that is motivated and can give many people a light bulb of enlightenment. Phoenix discusses how serotonin can affect our lives, including our diet success.

She has basically spent many years researching this aspect of the brain and how it can affect our daily lives including our eating habits. So, the question is if mood has a relation to diet and weight loss success or not? I would have to say yes it does, based upon my own eating habits prior to a year ago.

Yes I did. Did it help? You can get it at probably any pharmacy or nutrition store. Seritonin is responsible for mood. If you have a low serotonin level, you might be depressed, more inclined toward cravings, and less motivated toward a positive outlook on life.

So, according the Phoenix, and other researchers she discusses in her book, maintaining a healthy serotonin level in your body can help control cravings, among other things. She also discusses what enviromental and food realted items are responsible for the depletion of serotonin. Stress for instance depletes serotonin. I did not realize this. Caffiene depletes serotonin.

Many other factors deplete serotonin in the body leaving us drained, depressed, exhausted, and possibly in a foul mood. So, what do we do when plagued with a low serotonin level? Sure thing….. I did take 5HTP for a while, but I also learned from the book other things that can help increase your serotonin levels in the body. Exercise increases serotonin in the body. Go figure! The one thing I had been dreading to do was the one thing I needed to do to turn myself around.

I think I took 5HTP for a few months.

  • I still have a bottle sitting in my cupboard. Did it help me? This book was a good read for me because it made me think about an aspect of diet failure I had never realized even existed. How you feel has just as much to do with your success as the things you do to overcome your obstacles. Maintaining a positive attitude when you have a mountain to climb can be a daunting task. The good news is that there are people thinking about these challenges and coming up with explanations and ways to help people overcome the odds.

    Phoenix Gilman is one such person. She says very early in her book that diet failure is not your fault. She definately caught my attention. Not only does she go on to explain how our brains work and how serotonin plays an important role in our daily lives, but she discusses many ways we can over come the challenges we face in our battle to lose weight.
